Packing Guidelines for Storage

While we work hard to keep your items safe, we move a lot of items and there are always bumps as we load, unload and transport everything. Therefore, it is critical that items are properly packed to ensure their safety and the safety of our team members. Below are packing guidelines for items being put into storage.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

  • Please write your name and phone number on all boxes or shrink wrapped items with a permanent marker.  It is also recommended that you place a paper with your name and phone number inside each item to help identify it if needed.

  • While we do our best to keep each item safe, loss or damage can occur.  For this reason, we recommend that you don't pack and store items that are valuable, irreplaceable or overly fragile.

SMALL ITEMS

We require that all small items are placed in boxes to prevent loss/damage.  Boxes also should not exceed 50lbs. Overweight boxes will be assessed a fee of $1 per pound over 50 lbs.

Boxes must be durable enough to withstand the moving process. While we don't require that you use our boxes, we have boxes and packing kits available for purchase.  Inexpensive moving boxes purchased from Uhaul, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. typically have thinner walls and don't withstand the moving process. If purchasing boxes, please look for ones that are marked as "Heavy Duty" or "Shipping Box".

Please tape the top and bottom of all boxes. We can't accept boxes with folded flaps. Tape is included in our packaging kits and rolls of tape will be available for purchase on day of pickup.

Plastic Totes, Suitcases and Duffle Bags can be used in place of boxes to pack your smaller items. Please keep in mind that damage to totes/suitcases during moving are not covered.

Lastly, if boxing fragile items, please use bubble wrap or other protective materials.  Damage caused by insufficient internal packaging is not covered.

LARGE ITEMS

We don't require that large items are boxed for storage, but we do require that large items are shrink wrapped to provide minimal protection against minor cosmetic damage, dirt and dampness.  If large items are not shrink wrapped at time of pickup, our team can shrink wrap them for $8 per item.

Below is a list of requirements for specific types of large items:

  • REFRIGERATORS:  Must be defrosted and dried prior to pickup to prevent mold

  • TV's/MONITORS:  Must be boxed

  • MICROWAVES:  Must be boxed, remove and bubble wrap interior glass plate

  • LARGE MIRRORS/FLOOR LAMPS:  Must be boxed, if inexpensive it is likely best to discard and purchase a new one for the next semester

  • PLASTIC DRAWERS:  Inexpensive plastic drawers are often made of poor quality plastic which may not withstand the moving process. Even if shrink wrapped, we can not cover damage to plastic drawer sets

  • PARTICLE BOARD/PRESSED WOOD FURNITURE: Particle board furniture is not made for transporting. If storing, it is recommended that you disassemble them.  Please note if you do not disassemble them, we will do our best to safely move and store them, but damage can not be covered.

  • MATTRESS/MATTRESS PAD: Must be bagged for storage. Mattress bags are available for purchase if needed.

  • REMOVEABLE FEET/WHEELS:  These often come off during the moving process. Please remove them prior our arrival and place them in a box with smaller items.
